Hello!
I wanted to share this dresser makeover I did a while back. I scored this piece off of a Facebook Buy/Sell group. When I picked it up, it was apparent that somebody had given it a makeover more than once…or at least tried to!
This was the listing photo.
I bought it for my 6yr old daughter and I wanted to give it a dainty, girly look…like a pretty soft pink. Well, when I asked for her input – I should have never asked her – she had other plans. She wanted it purple and zebra. 🙂 oooook.
I wasn’t about to try and do zebra stripes but I let her pick the purple! It was actually a color match to her bed quilt.
The dried paint was drippy, chippy and not very pretty. And there was a glitter glaze over the top making the feel of the dresser really rough. I ended up using my orbital sander to take off the glittery stuff and paint. Here a picture of the in-between…I worked on the drawers after I did the dresser. (Forgot to take photos!) I sanded and sanded until the surface felt smooth.
Sometimes you get lucky if you can find a piece that doesn’t need a lot of work..not this one! This project took a lot of prep work just to get to the point of painting! It totally defeated the purpose of why I wanted to use chalk paint….no prep! oh, well…next time.
A successful outcome is always in the prep work and while I do not particularly care for it, it must be done. Once I got all the drip marks and glitter sanded off, I wiped down all surfaces with a damp cloth to remove the dust completely.
Then I mixed up my chalk paint and started painting. It took 2 coats.
This was actually the first time I tried a chalk paint powder! I have dabbled in many DIY chalk paints and have found my favorite recipes so I was very curious about using a pre-mixed powder. I was pretty impressed with it. It was easy to mix up and it went on nicely and dried really fast between coats. It wasn’t too expensive either.
After the second coat was dry I lightly sanded it with a 400 grit sanding block to smooth the paint, wiped it down and then I applied a poly top coat.
She was a happy girl when she saw those zebra knobs!
